650Fit is exercise physiologist Canyon Twer’s brainchild. As a co-founder of the fitness center he manages and leads, trains and educates us about better health. Here are three points from his recent “Resolutions” seminar on how to stick to your New Year’s health resolutions held at the Fleet Feet store. This advice applies to all of us, including current or aspiring walkers!
1. Stats show that many people are motivated to start weight loss programs in January and by the end of February/March, they’ve fizzled out. One of the big reasons is lack of strategy and lack of planning for success. Set up a game plan by selecting exercises and activities that you enjoy. Incorporate all components of fitness to maximize your success. Those components: cardiovascular, weight training, flexibility and core/abdominal work.
2. Don’t set yourself up for failure by starting an unrealistic crash course. Walkers and others can avoid this pitfall by following a program that includes assessment, goal setting, scheduling and measurement/tracking. Start with tests that determine your benchmarks. Seek professional and medical advice to set safe and realistic goals. Schedule exercise, workout and activity times in advance. Put them on your refrigerator calendar, executive planner, Palm or Dayrunner.
3. Build in change and variety--vary your activities! And, finally, set up rewards for yourself. Acknowledge and celebrate achievement of your goals.
