WALK NEWS :: NorCal Honors Ecologist Maathai

Thank you, Fran Clarke (UC Master Gardener, Sacramento Tree Foundation advocate) for sharing this news ::

Please join Sacramento Tree Foundation and key others for a community tree planting and dedication ceremony, Friday September 21, 12:30-1:30 pm. honoring Wangari Maathai at the State Capitol Grounds southeast side opposite the Rose Garden. Maathai is the mother of three, the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate, and the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

State and local elected officials will be on hand with Mayor Heather Fargo and students from St. Hope Academy and Sacramento H.S. The Foundation will dedicate a tree in Dr. Maathai's honor--the valley oak, a tree native to the Sacramento region and known for its majestic arching canopy.

In the evening, California Lectures presents Maathai for a talk and signing of her memoir, Unbowed (cover photo here) at Westminster Presbyterian Church.
