NorCal "Must Do": Karen Stoyanowski's Racewalking Class

Karen Stoyanowski (photo here) is an elite racewalking athlete whose class on Effective Walking will be offered in June at the Learning Exchange in Northern California (NorCal). The racewalking primer, developed over the course of a decade and designed to provide a valuable introduction for all levels of walkers and runners, includes an overview of the sport of racewalking and hands-on racewalking instruction. Click here to visit Sierra Racewalkers Club site for info about the sport and local activities.

Stoyanowski's friendly, informal teaching style will put you at ease as you receive the following basics you'll need to get started racewalking including:

- Mobility exercise instruction and hands-on exercise sessions
- Strategic tips for intensifying your walking

Specifically, you will learn through Stoyanowski's:

- Individual walk critique and coaching
- Individual and group gait analysis

In addition to recreational and social walkers, you'll find power walkers and other outdoor enthusiasts in the class. Karen's teaching and tips can help you:

- Gain a new network of racewalking buddies
- Find out how to support and grow your new interest in racewalking (club activities, events and membership)

WHO'S KAREN?

Stoyanowski is the fastest active racewalker in the Sacramento area. She's also a winner of the U.S. National Master Award, several National Masters Championships and has participated in the U.S. Olympic Trials. Google Karen and her times pop up all over the Internet. She's pictured and talked about in books on the sport, too.

Lucky for residents of California, Karen is local and, among other accomplishments and contributions to the walking community, Karen founded the Sierra Racewalker Club in the 1980's. In addition to continuing to enter marathons, teach clinics and help prepare others for competition, for the past 11 years Karen has taught the area's leading introductory racewalking class at the Learning Exchange.
