This is a snipet from Dave Olson's latest update on the Idita-walk. Please see our January 15 Walktopia post for an introduction to this Iditarod-inspired virtual walking program.
"Greetings from Nome, Alaska! Today, an extremely chilly -31.4F! We are getting closer to the kick-off of this years walking event. Only 11 days until the official start of Idita-walk 2006 where your time can be logged. Only 26 days remain to get registered and paid in order to receive the finishers T-shirt or dog leash (quite an accomplishment!). Please visit the site often to check for new articles, pictures, testimonials, etc.
Getting good amounts of exercise is fundamental to healthy living, and walking is an excellent source with many wonderful benefits! Here are links that explain the health and fitness benefits of regular, brisk walking.
(WALKTOPIA NOTE: We've added descriptors to let you know where Dave's original links take you and what you can expect to find there)
1 - Men's Fitness Magazine Introduces A Power Walking Plan
2 - Wendy Bumgardner's About.com Resources
3 - The Ramblers (UK), Britain's Biggest Walking Charity
4 - University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center's Pedestrian and Bike Info Center (PBIC) Walking Guide
5 - AARP's Top 20 Articles by and for Seniors
Also, here's exactly where your registration dollars have been spent over the past 2 years. We supported Eagle Scout projects at the Girl Scout Camp and XYZ Senior Center. Both places encourage physical activities for the young, and not so young, by making them accessible to everyone. We contributed to the maintenance of the Boy Scout Camp, Camp Bronson. We gave four Eagle Scout Continuing Education Scholarships to Eagle Scouts who are still working with younger scouts.
We hope to see you out on the trail very soon!"
Dave, we wish you continued success in your event that inspires, educates and involves walkers around the world. Gotta add that, we looked it up and "XYZ" is the real name of the Nome Senior Center! We'd love to learn the story behind that name.
