Like-Minded

Finding walk art to walk zen isn't easy--it's absolutely fun! Everyone gets to express ideas about walking, walk culture and the walk community in ever-new and different ways. Along those lines, here are two projects (outside the realm of walk culture) with like-minded intentions. Both set out to present new ways of doing a familiar thing...and in doing so, they exponentially increase the fun and other benefits.

...Do Something awards $500 to community service projects by, for and about youth. One 2005 winner is "Write On!", a New York City-based "group focused on introducing writing in a new and fun way. The program will teach that creative writing is a great form of therapy and artistic expression."

...In The Mix, an award-winning reality tv show for teens, features a segment about "Watermelon Ball" and the high school "students who invented their own sport and made it part of the intramural program. The point? Fun, challenges, and fulfillment can be found even in low-pressure, low-commitment activities." We also heard about "Pickle Ball" -- a similar high school intramural sport that evolved in the same way.
